Sahara: Moroccan Autonomy Plan, Very Important Initiative, Says ORU SG

Rio de Janeiro - The autonomy initiative for the Sahara is very important as it grants broad powers to the people of the southern provinces, Secretary General of the United Regions Organization/ Forum of Global Association of Regional Governments and Regions Associations (ORU/ FOGAR), Carlos Llorens Vila, said.
"The autonomy initiative for the Sahara is an important project that shall be studied, since it provides broad powers" to local populations, the Spanish expert told MAP on the sidelines of his participation in the 7th World Summit of regional governments under the ORU / FOGAR, which kicked off Thursday in Rio de Janeiro.

The Spanish expert in decentralization, who visited Morocco several times, the autonomy initiative proposed by Morocco in 2007 to end a regional conflict that has lasted too long "is broader than the initiative implanted in Catalonia".

He said that the ORU/ FOGAR attaches "great attention" to the regionalization process launched by Morocco to be in line with the regional specificities and facilitate the management of local affairs by the populations of the region, welcoming the participation of Morocco in the World Summit of regional governments.

A large Moroccan delegation led by Mohand Laenser, president of Morocco's Regions Association and the Regional Council of Fez -Meknès take part in the 7th World Summit of regional governments under the ORU / FOGAR.
