Morocco, Spain Sign MoU on Forest Resilience

Rabat – Morocco and Spain signed, on Wednesday in Rabat, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on a pre-research program on forest ecosystem resilience to climate change.

Signed by Morocco's high commissioner for water, forests and the fight against desertification, Abdeladim Lhafi, and Spanish secretary of state for scientific research and innovation, Carmen Vela Olmo, this program aims to set up a network to share information between Morocco and Spain in this area.

Lhafi told MAP on the sidelines of the signing of the MoU that this program will inquire into the situation on the ground to help prepare adaptation plans for climate change to better know the dynamics and mechanisms of ecosystem functioning.

The purpose of this network, he said, is the production, dissemination and transfer of scientific knowledge to understand and predict the dynamics of forest and peri-forest areas.

Lhafi recalled that Morocco has a large intercontinental biosphere area spanning over a million hectare including marine area, noting that the objective of this program is to create synergy between the Moroccan and Spanish research institutions through a networking process.

This pre-research program provides for improving networking skills and experiences in the management and restoration of natural ecosystems in both countries, developing research on mitigation and adaptation in the management of global change, and fostering knowledge transfer.
