Morocco, Guatemala Discuss Means to Strengthen Bilateral Cooperation

Guatemala City - Minister delegate in charge of the environment, Hakima El Haite, held talks here on Monday with members of Guatemala’s parliament and representatives of the private sector which focused on the means to strengthen cooperation between the two countries.

El Haite, who is the Special Envoy for mobilization in the steering committee of the 22th Conference of Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, had talks with the Guatemalan Deputy Minister of Foreign affairs Carlos Ramiro Martinez.

The two sides stressed the importance of COP22, to be held in November in Marrakech, in the implementation of the Paris agreement on climate.

El Haite highlighted, in this regard, the strategy adopted by Morocco to fight against climate change.

The two sides stressed the need to develop and implement cooperation projects, particularly in the areas of energy, industry, agriculture and environment.

El Haite also met the speaker of the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala, Mario Taracena Diaz-Sol, with whom she discussed the participation of Central America and Caribbean countries in the COP22.

She said that "Morocco is willing to share its expertise in the fight against climate change with Guatemala."

For his part, Diaz-Sol, who is also the president of the Forum of Presidents of the Legislative Bodies of Central America and the Caribbean Basin (FOPREL), said that his participation in the COP22 would allow him to speak for the ten member countries of the Forum, who have set up "a development initiative for the countries that are very vulnerable to climate change."

El Haite also had a working meeting with the head of the Coordinating Committee of Agricultural, Commercial, Industrial, and Financial Associations, José González Campo.

The minister is on a visit to Guatemala to take part in a regional forum on environment, climate change, and food security organized by the Central American Parliament (PARLACEN).
