Importance of Development Dynamic Triggered in Sahara Showcased in Geneva

Geneva - The strategic importance of the development dynamic triggered by HM King Mohammed VI in the Moroccan Sahara was showcased on Monday at a meeting of the UNHRC in Geneva.

During a debate on the follow-up of the Vienna Declaration and its action plan, Morocco's permanent representative to the UN in Geneva, ambassador Mohamed Aujjar, underlined that the southern provinces are witnessing a sustained political, economic, social and cultural dynamic which confirms attachment of the population to the implementation of socio-economic and cultural development policies in the region.

He recalled that the large-scale projects launched by the sovereign during his latest visit in the Saharan cities are in line with the Kingdom's ongoing efforts seeking to turn the Sahara into a hub of development which is open on Africa and the world for the benefit of local population.

Awaiting a final an mutually-acceptable political solution to this artificial dispute on the basis of the autonomy initiative, Morocco remains committed to the implementation of its new development model, he said.

This model is meant to reinforce the socio-economic and cultural conditions of a developed and stable Sahara, offering the local populations means to fully enjoy their human rights, he added.
