Counter-terrorism: Spanish Security Official Hails “extremely effective” Cooperation with Morocco

Madrid - Spain and Morocco enjoy an “extremely effective” cooperation in counter-terrorism, Commander Ferrer Salas, head of counter-terrorism in the Spanish civil Guard, said here on Thursday.

Speaking at a Spanish-Moroccan forum on security and counter-terrorism, Salas noted that cooperation between Spanish and Moroccan security services, which develops and improves from year to year, is characterized by a "high degree of confidence".

Coordination and information exchange between the two sides led to significant results in recent years, as witnessed by the large number of terrorist cells dismantled both in Morocco and Spain, he added.

"We take full advantage of the different mechanisms of coordination and cooperation” to face the threat of terrorism and the phenomenon of radicalization, he said.

For his part, the director of Morocco's central bureau of judiciary investigations, Abdelhak El Khayam, highlighted the “comprehensive and multifaceted” strategy adopted by Morocco in its fight against terrorism, adding that this strategy focuses on security and religious aspects as well as on the fight against poverty.

"The vigilance of the Moroccan security services has certainly helped to thwart several malicious acts, but zero risk does not exist," he noted, adding that 35 ISIS-linked terror cell have been dismantled.

The Spanish-Moroccan Forum on security and counter-terrorism was marked by the participation of security officials, academics, researchers as well as Moroccan and Spanish experts.
