Benin Lauds in New York Morocco's decision to Rejoin African Union

New York (United Nations) - Benin lauded, on Monday before the 4th UN Commission, Morocco's decision to rejoin the African Union (AU). "Benin lauds the decision taken by the Kingdom of Morocco to rejoin the African Union, during the Summit of the Union, held on July 17-18, 2016 in Kigali, Rwanda," said Permanent Representative of Benin to the UN, ambassador Jean Claude do Rego.

Do Rego said that as a founding member of the Organization of the African Unity, the AU's predecessor, "Morocco has continued to consolidate its relations with African countries and spared no effort to fully support them in the fight against poverty and the promotion of partnerships for development.

" Tackling the Moroccan Sahara issue, the Beninese diplomat welcomed the UN's efforts to establish a "frank and constructive" dialogue between the parties, and the Security Council's resolutions to “promote the emergence of a negotiated and consensual settlement" to this issue.
